A study released yesterday puts the spotlight on the early childhood obesity epidemic – an issue First 5 LA knows is serious and has made the focus of one of it’s four strategic goals (Ready. Set. Grow! is the parenting website of the child advocacy agency First 5 LA). All children in Los Angeles County must maintain a healthy weight by being free from obesity. Which means, like the new study suggests, that all caregivers need to help the youngest children be healthy by serving nutritious foods and ensuring they get lots of physical activity.
As the Los Angeles Times reported, the “Early Childhood Obesity Prevention Policies,” released yesterday, have lots of good recommendations for adults to help kids have healthy weights. These include breastfeeding, adequate sleep and a healthy diet.
As part of First 5 LA’s and Ready. Set. Grow!’s battle against childhood obesity, we will be putting the spotlight on sugar-sweetened beverages this summer.
